Music Video Analsis - Presentation Transcript

    1. Jack Penate–have I been a fool http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NUs9UdSKr5U I have analysed jack piñata’s video have I been a fool, I have chosen this video because it is an Indie genre the same as The Maccabees. Although the artist is one person and The Maccabees are a band the style of the videos are similar. The video starts with a shot using a ped up shot, of him running down a street, which is an interesting shot to start with as typically music video’s start with a stationary shot. The shows that the artist is on his own and not part of a band and using this shot to start with automatically makes the audience question what is happening there and exciting the audience. This is all happening during the introduction of the song, he only begins to sing when he knocks on the door and girl answers, the song & lyrics fit in with what he is saying to the girl. Clothing is used in the video to represent the cold weather therefore needing to wrap up warm. Using layers could also symbolize that the girl wants to “snuggle” up to him to feel more intimate towards him but at this point, we know he does not feel the same way. We now know that the music video is narrative and performance based as he says the lyrics to her whilst the song is going on. As they both get into a taxi that has arrived outside the house another girl is in the taxi, showing that he’s the girl that he was previously with, has not been the first for him to do this to. The video continues and they arrived at a park where a band is busking, he picks up the guitar and serenades the girl, showing the performance-based side to the video. This is also a very typical thing for Indie genre (music) to have in their video, also shows the audience that he is capable of playing instruments and writing the songs. Movement is used to change the girls from one to another, this shows all the girls that he has done this too; this again fits the stereotypes that "rockstars" or boys in a band are promiscuous. As the girls move on the swing or walk, or as a passer by goes into the shot it changes to a different shot. Most of the shots used during this are long shots showing that there isn’t much intimacy between him and these girls giving the “Rockstar” impression of being not bothered or not really caring too much. The scene cuts to him and various girls walking together in the park we are then shown a close up of him and the girls, allowing him to connect with the audience and give a more personal feel to the video. As he sings during this scene the girls look up at him longingly again fitting the stereotype of the “Rockstar” as he is being admired and almost idolised by these girls that so far seem oblivious to what he is doing. He does not show much emotion towards these girls, representing that he has control over them, symbolising also his male dominance.
    2. Throughout the rest of the video you feel you get to know him better as he becomes more intimate with the camera, and the girls on the screen. At one point he plays around with some food showing that he is vulnerable, funny and childlike too at times, this makes the audience more forgiving towards him and almost as if you are falling for his charm like the girls in the video. The video ends with him eventually performing/serenading to the one girl we meet at the beginning of the video, this shows the audience that he does care about her? During the performance close ups are used so we can feel the intimacy between the two characters and they therefore show their emotions. We feel this way as the lighting is directly shone on to him and the girl singling out everyone else in the room making the connection between the two people. This is significant as daylight/natural light is use for lighting in the video. You me at six: kiss and tell Music video analysis You Me at Six – Kiss and Tell http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7-PLUkpRQKM The video for you me at six - kiss and tell is of a pop punk/rock genre, the music video has quick cuts, and the mis en scene of the video is at a party, both of these characteristics are generally typical of this type of music as it portrays a typical “rock and roll” lifestyle. The video shows the band as “hardcore” partiers, which is not only typical of the genre but the bands age as well, with in the first few seconds of the video we have established that they’re is a party or has been one as we are shown a shot of the floor which has mess on, Polaroid photographs from the party showing the bands name and balloons. The director James Copeman has used crowds to give the video a slightly hectic and “wild” feel to the video fitting in with the genre and a typical lifestyle of teenagers, appealing to the band and their audience. The video is partially performance and partially narrative based, the band performs throughout all of the song but at the same time there is a party going on and you see what is happening during the video as well. At an estimate around three quarters of the video is given to the bands performance, the camera angles are used to give the audience a feel of being at the party/gig and the lead singer does look into the camera occasionally.
    3. The video makes quick cuts throughout the song, but they don’t necessarily match with the beat of the song as the song is fast paced it could appear that at times the video cuts with the beat of the song, Overall the song fits in well with the pace of the song. In the song there are solo parts played by the guitar, singer and the drummer in the song five of the solos are shown in the video at the end of each there is a short solo from the guitarist this is shown briefly each time. The camera movement is rough giving the audience a feel of what it is like to be where the band are, a technique allowing the audience to connect with the band. The majority of the shots are taken at eye level and medium close up and using these types of shots makes it feel more intimate again allowing the audience to connect with the band.
