Dr. Moran has been applying the behavioral sciences to
improve the work settings & environments for individuals
for over 20 years. He began his career as an electrician and
commercial roofer, and was promoted to several leadership
positions in service delivery organizations.
Dr. Moran was also a university professor for 10 year before
embarking on a career aimed to improve quality,
performance, and safety in major companies. His first
safety consulting endeavor was given the Psychologically
Healthy Workplace Award by the American Psychological
Association. He has installed successful BBS processes in
many industrial settings, including companies that have
high turnover rates due to migrating workers. Dr. Moran
has established safety processes in paper mills, oil fields,
manufacturing plants, power plants, and hospitals.
Daniel has published several books and articles about
changing behavior, and his next publication, Building
Safety Commitment, will be available in April 2013. He has
given keynote addresses and invited presentations to the
OSHA Oil & Gas Conference, the Behavior Safety Now
conference, and the American Society of Safety Engineers
Leadership Conference.
Dr. Moran not only trains frontline workers, but also
performs executive coaching for CEOs and supervisors. He
has held numerous elected positions in the field of
behavioral science. In addition, he has appeared on-screen
talent for several television shows on the Discovery
Channel, Animal Planet, The Learning Channel, and the
Oprah Winfrey Network.

The aim of this interactive workshop is to provide
you with new skills critical to the management of
safety and other business activities such as
quality and productivity.
After attending this workshop, you will leave
fully armed with the knowledge needed to
introduce behavioral safety into your
organization.
The combination of interactive presentations,
hands-on exercises and open discussion groups
along with real case studies, ensures you will
obtain maximum value from attending.
• The workshop will focus on the prevention of
workplace injuries by focusing on people's safety
related behaviors.
• The management approach presented in the
workshop has proven to be extremely effective
at reducing injury rates, and other serious
consequences such as property damage,
business interruptions, environmental releases,
regulatory agency violations, etc.
• Case studies will include the successful
application of effective behavioral techniques in
Offshore Oil & Gas, Petrochemicals and
Manufacturing.
• Lessons learned from other work places within
the Construction, Paper, Steel, Food,
Agrochemical and chemical industries will also
be explored throughout the course.
• Results achieved include Zero Lost Time
Accident Rates within 12-18 months, and
improved bottom line profits.
Creating the Observation Process
Based on research on behavioral safety, a safety observation process is
the basic foundation for an effective process. In this module, participants
learn:
- How to identify and describe safe behaviors
- How to involve all employees in designing safety checklists
- What options are available for the design of behavioral checklists
- How to create an observation process
- What are the different types of behavioral observation processes and
when are they appropriate
Morning exercise: Design of a mock observation checklist and process
appropriate to their organization
Conducting Safety Observations
Conducting observations effectively requires that observers be able to
have an effective conversation about what they observed. In this module,
participants learn:
- How to conduct safety observations
- How to have an effective conversation that supports safe practices
- How to have a conversation that corrects at-risk behaviors
- What are the best strategies for overcoming resistance to BBS
Afternoon exercise: Conduct an observation and lead a safety
conversation based on video work samples provided by the instructor

Safety Basics
Participants learn basic information about safety, including problems
with traditional safety programs:
- Why traditional programs fail
- Why workers don't like traditional audits
- Why traditional safety award programs don't work
- What current research suggest about the design of a behavior based
safety process
Morning exercise: Review the elements of their current safety efforts
The Safety Assessment
Participants will learn:
- What to look for in assessing safety improvement efforts
- What barriers need to be addressed to ensure a successful
behavior-based safety process implementation
- How to build management support for new improvement efforts
- How to create an implementation structure that ensures a successful
improvement effort
Mid afternoon exercise: Complete and discuss readiness assessment
Creating a Behavior Based Safety Culture
Employees often have the perception that "all management cares about
are the numbers" or that "this program is just one more piece of paper."
Participants learn:
- How to create a culture that supports concern for fellow employees
- How to establish a foundation of values to support the integrity of a
behavioral process
- How to identify and describe specific behaviors
Final afternoon exercise: Pinpoint practices consistent with values

Developing Action Plans
Observation data must be used to improve safety and the observation
process. Participants learn:
- How to use data in the safety process
- How to address the most common problems in behavioral safety
processes
- How to design and coordinate support programs
- What kinds of programs other companies have tried
Morning exercise: Develop an action plan based on simulated
observation data
Safety Leadership
In this module, participants learn:
- How to involve upper management
- The things exemplary safety leaders do that ineffective leaders do not
- How to define the role of management in maintaining the safety process
- How to get management started supporting BBS
- How to prepare managers and supervisors to respond correctly when
confronted with real-time safety issues
Afternoon exercise: Practice appropriate responding to employees at
critical times.
Building Accountability for Safety Leadership
In this module, participants learn:
- The one most important thing that effective leaders must do
- How to create behavioral alignment to ensure that each level of
leadership is supportive of and focused on safety
- The importance of having a leadership safety agenda at each level of
your organization
Final exercises:
1. Develop a preliminary list of leadership practices appropriate for each
level of the organization
2. Develop a preliminary accountability plan for critical leadership
practices
3. Develop an action plan for starting the implementation of BBS.
