    Capital Campaign - Presentation Transcript

      • Leading Our Community to
      • Eliminate Hunger
    1. Our High Cost of Living: The Source of Hunger in Our Community
      • $84,800: The annual income a family of four must earn to make ends meet in San Mateo and Santa Clara counties.
      • $16,000: The annual income earned by a person making the $8 minimum wage.
      • Government programs only assist families who earn less than $40,000 a year.
    2. Our High Cost of Living: The Source of Hunger in Our Community
      • 245,000: The number of households in our community that make less than is necessary for self-sufficiency.
      • 122,000: The number of households that qualify for government assistance programs.
    3. Our High Cost of Living: The Source of Hunger in Our Community
      • More than half of people in our region who earn too little to make ends meet earn too much to qualify for government assistance programs.
      • This gap leads to hunger.
    4. Lupe and Samantha Like most of Second Harvest’s clients, Lupe works – she is a certified nurse assistant – but still struggles to pay her bills. Food from Second Harvest frees up her income so she can buy school uniforms and supplies for her daughter, Samantha, as well as her 10-year-old son.
    5. Second Harvest Food Bank: Our Region’s Efficient Solution to Hunger
      • Second Harvest is the largest non-governmental source of food in our region.
      • In fiscal year 2008, we distributed enough food for nearly 27 million meals .
    6. Second Harvest Food Bank: Our Region’s Efficient Solution to Hunger
      • We spend 96¢ of every $1 donated to feed hungry people.
      • Charity Navigator awarded us its highest 4-star rating for the second year in a row, earned by only 17% of nonprofits nationwide.
    7. Second Harvest Food Bank: Our Region’s Efficient Solution to Hunger
      • We work with more than 400 agencies throughout Santa Clara and San Mateo counties to get food to:
        • Kids who need energy to learn and play
        • Adults building new life and job skills
        • Seniors trying to stay healthy and involved in their communities
    8. Stan A sudden illness left Stan unable to walk, out of work, and struggling to provide for his family. While Stan trains for a new career as a bus driver, he relies on food from Second Harvest to help get through this difficult time.
    9. Growing to Feed More: The Need for a New Warehouse
      • By 2012, we must increase our food distribution to enough for 35 million meals.
      • But we only have enough space to distribute 32.3 million meals.
      • We will run out of room in 2011.
    10. Growing to Feed More: The Need for a New Warehouse The Solution: Replace our 22,000-square-foot San Carlos warehouse with a 70,000-square-foot warehouse in south San Mateo County. We will then have the capacity to serve both counties with enough food for 54 million meals – twice what we distribute now.
    11. Growing to Feed More: The Need for a New Warehouse
      • We need your help to secure a new warehouse and continue to:
      • Maximize volunteer contributions
      • Minimize food waste
      • Feed our region’s hungry now and into the future
    12. Zelia Zelia worked for more than 30 years at the Presidio in San Francisco. She now lives on her pension and Social Security in San Mateo County. Food from Second Harvest helps her get the healthy food she needs but can’t afford or access without a car.
      • Please join us
and help lead our community to eliminate hunger. Contact Kate Wilson at (408) 266-8866 ext. 268 or [email_address] to learn how you can be part of our success.
