  • I think it is important for students to be introduced to ICT at an early age and be aware that they would not be just consumers of technology but also planners and designers with that technology. This presentation covered this issue in a great way and i found it to be very enjoyable, thanks

  • Personal web technologies offers students the ability to be independent and motivated learners. There is such a range of PWT's it's no wonder that the concept of differentiation and technology go so well. I found the visualisation of a web based PLE diagram very interesting because it gave me the whole picture. It shows the integration of everything and what we are aiming for.

  • The focus on PWT's is a crucial component to the development of the 'life long learner' as our focus with students is to teach them skills that they can carry into their future. The inclusion of PWT's in this goal is essential in the formation of their ICT competency, and a valuable attribute to their future careers. Students are already quite competent in their own social networks, but applying the big picture thinking of 'what can I do with these skills' needs to be utilised by educators, or else it becomes dormant in the students' list of strengths.

In our group discussion, we mentioned the transition from linear to non linear learning as a goal for education. It would seem that the early years of schooling are very heavily based o a linear model, which is important in establishing core skills. During the latter years of schooling, however, we should be promoting a non linear system so that when students eave school, they are able to recognise the role of the teacher as one of many possibilities in the acquisition of knowledge.

  • This was very interesting presentation but it is a bit challenging for me because i did not know about PWTS such as bookmarking, metagatores and aggregators before. I think I need your advice to learn more about those things. I have tried to utilize but i found difficulties on on them.
Obviously, this tool is very useful for a teacher who works online on his own computer or laptop. In fact, it is slightly unsafe for using public computer. Regarding to connectivist learning styles, teachers can save time and minimize the web page when they work their jobs.

  • The other disadvantage to PWTs is a time management issue - it takes a lot of time to establish and filter through the information you can source using these tools, and often time can be wasted in the process.
I think from a teaching point of view, teachers prefer linear teaching... however I think non-linear learning opportunities are often best for students - they can select what is needed and when it is appropriate for them. Some students learn best with one method or the other - the trick is for teachers to model and use both over time.
I think it is not only students who don't know how to utlise the best from PWTs, but also teachers and leaders. Sites like Twitter can be used to chat about social events and celebrity gossip, but can also provide great resources, links and connections with people who have similar areas of inquiry or interests. The key is to develop meaningful links with people who can provide this.

  • This social bookmarking sites allow you to save web pages, articles, and other media and organize them in personally meaningful ways.Connotea and Zotero are tools that usually used for academic research (manage reference and generate citations).
  • Personal Publishing tool is user friendly tool that usually free and allows you to build your own web page and publish it on the internet. However, blogs is more than online diaries. Camplese (2009) proposes that blogging be used to create and individualized content management system that publishes, organizes, and archives an on-going activity feed of a student’s learning.
  • Aggregators refers to a web site or computer software that combines a specific type of information from multiple online sources.
  • Metagators is also called portals or start pages, can aggregate feeds, social networks and widget to create a central, personalized location for an individual’s internet usage (Morton, 2008). You can choose your own home screen by selecting a criteria that you interested in.
  • Students know about PWTs, but they do not really know about the potential and the benefit from the deep learning of PWTs
  • Connection addiction – Increasingly connected to the virtual world, actually you are disconnected to your “real world” (family and friends)Work Interrupted – Don’t realize that you are wasting more time for checking new articles, status updatesPopularity contests – Possibility for some well-known individuals to dominate online discussion by gathering their followersEcho Chambers - Any forum for communication in which all members agree with everyone else (need diversity)Privacy & Security contents - Personal publishing tools have the potential to make people vulnerable by criticism and harassment from the commenters, Individuals who work with sensitive information must make sure their use of PWTs does not constitute a security risk for themselves, or for their organization

    2. 2. Preview and outcomes: This presentation will describe how personal web technologies (PWTs) can be used by learners and the relationship between PWTs and connectivist learning principles. Several technologies including social bookmarking tools, personal publishing platforms, metagators and aggregators are also included in this presentation. With these tools, individual can create and manage personal learning environments (PLEs) and personal learning networks (PLNs), which have the potential to become powerful resources for academic, professional, and personal development. Maximise PWTs forconnectivism & continuouslearning : Visualization of a web-based PLE “If individuals can sufficiently develop their ability to find, organize, and manage these connections, their available knowledge does not have to be limited by the confines of their own skulls.” (McElvaney & Berg, 2009) Powerpoint Templates Page 5

    13. 13. Discussion 1. What other disadvantages using PWTs in learning (for teachers and students)? 2. Which learning method is better for teaching, is it linear or non-linear? Give reason! 3. Many students know about the PWTs, however they do not really know the potential and the benefit from the deep learning of PWTs, what do you (as a teacher) think to solve this problem? Powerpoint Templates Page 13
    14. 14. Conclusion When learners adopt personal web technologies, it enables and requires them to discard their roles as passive consumers of information and to take on new roles. While teachers and trainers can encourage the use of PWTs and aid in the development of the related skills needed to use them, the true quality and effectiveness of a PLE or PLN depends on the learner him/herself. For self-directed, critical-thinking individuals, personal web technologies present a range of new learning possibilities. Powerpoint Templates Page 14
