  • 1. Oakland Animal Services Animal Care Attendant’s – Value Statement  The Animal Care Attendants of Oakland Animal Services value their role providing the best care possible for the animals housed at Oakland Animal Services. They work towards meeting not only each animal’s physical needs but also their mental and behavioral ones. They are committed to reducing the stress of the animals at the shelter.  The Animal Care Attendants of Oakland Animal Services value working together as a team and helping each other. They value helping each other to ensure that all the animals are cared for each day and that no ACA is overwhelmed with more work than any other. They agree that when an ACA has completed his/her assignment and still has time left until the end of his/her shift that it is his/her responsibility as a member of the team to help other ACA’s finish their work.  The Animal Care Attendants of Oakland Animal Services value each ACA as an equal and important member of the team and that each Animal Care Attendant brings important skills to the group as a whole. They value new animal care attendants and strive to welcome them as an essential and valued member of the team. Animal Care Attendants value other OAS staff and volunteers and strive to communicate and cooperate with them.  The Animal Care Attendants of Oakland Animal Services value the importance of completing their animal care duties as outlined in the procedures manual. They understand that consistency in these duties is important and that these procedures have been developed over time to improve the health and well being of the shelter’s animals.  The Animal Care Attendants of Oakland Animal Services value the importance of constantly looking for new ways to improve the care of the shelter’s animals – making this care less stressful for the animals and the Animal Care Attendants. Animal Care Attendants understand that they each are responsible for identifying issues that need to be improved in the care of the animals and bringing these concerns to the supervisory and veterinary staff. They agree that it is important to not change any procedure without first getting approval.  The Animal Care Attendants of Oakland Animal Services value the importance of their role in ensuring that each Animal Care Attendant is performing their duties properly and effectively. They each agree that they should talk with any animal care attendant who is not performing their duties correctly or not pulling their weight and see if they need assistance with improving their performance. However, when work performance issues continue to be a problem then it is important for Animal Care Attendants to bring these concerns to a supervisor since they understand that poor performance by one Animal Care Attendant can have serious consequences on the health and welfare of the shelter’s animals and negatively effect the entire work environment for all ACA’s.  The Animal Care Attendants of Oakland Animal Services value the importance of addressing their concerns with one another and their work conditions as directly and as quickly as possible. They agree to bring up concerns and to listen to feedback from fellow ACA’s in as calm, open and positive way as possible. They believe that they have an important role in creating a positive work environment and understand that if a fellow ACA is complaining or gossiping that they have a responsibility to assist that ACA in addressing their issues directly or helping them speak to a supervisor rather than engaging in the complaining or gossiping.
