The!appreciaRve!research!project!•  ThirtyPtwo!educators!from!a!secondary! school!in!Bloemfontein,!South!Africa! parRcipated!in!an!appreciaRve!workshop! of!the!2010!South!African!concert!of!André! Rieu!and!his!orchestra.!!•  StarRng!with!the!Discovery!phase!the! educators!appreciated!an!hourPlong! extract!of!items!performed!at!the!concert.!
  • 13. !While!appreciaRng!the!concert,!the! parRcipants!!•  individually!reflected!on!the!arRstry! of!these!excellent!performers!!•  by!reporRng!on!their!own!thoughts,! insights!and!observaRons! – regarding!quesRons!! – provided!in!a!workbook! – prepared!by!the!researchers.!
  • 14. !Based!on!what!the!parRcipants! saw!in!the!DVD,!they!then! conducted!appreciaRve! interviews!!•  to!idenRfy!insights,!stories!or! strengths!from!the!concert!!•  that!could!give!life!to!their! school/teaching!pracRce.!

The!quesRons!included!the!following:!! !•  Which!music!item!was!your!personal!favourite!and!why!did!you!prefer!this! specific!one?!•  Which!aspect!of!the!performance!did!you!value!most!and!why?!•  What!characterisRcs!from!the!performance!of!André!Rieu!and!his! orchestra!might!you!apply!in!your!classroom?!!•  What!would!you!say!is!the!ONE!thing!that!gives!life!to!his!performance!–! the!one!thing!without!which!it!would!simply!not!be!the!same?!!•  Can!you!explain!why!André!Rieu!and!so!many!people!in!the!audience!were! crying?!•  Why!is!the!interacRon!between!André!Rieu,!his!orchestra!and!the! audience!so!successful?!•  !In!your!opinion,!what!can!the!staff!of!the!school!possibly!take!from!the! performance!of!André!Rieu!and!his!orchestra!to!improve!their!teaching?!•  What!could!he!possibly!do!to!make!his!performance!even!be[er?!Answers!to!these!quesRons!led!to!the!idenRficaRon!of!themes!per!group.!

Concluding!remarks!and!way!forward!•  All!the!themes!have!been!embedded!in!current! educaRonal!theory!•  The!themes!were!therefore!validated!as!applicable!to! the!modern!South!African!classroom!situaRon!•  CompleRon!of!first!two!stages:!Discover!and!Dream!•  Staff!at!Dr!Blok!School!used!the!themes!for!designing!a! teaching!improvement!plan!at!the!beginning!of!2012!•  The!DesRny!phase!will!be!studied!at!a!later!stage!•  Therefore:! –  It!is!indeed!possible!to!use!the!arts!for!the!professional! development!of!teachers!and!other!professionals!! –  The!4DPcycle!is!EXCEPTIONALLY!suitable!to!structure!!or! scaffold!the!INTERDISCIPLINARY!learning!process!
