Who is Saint Valentine? • A Roman priest in the 3rd Century. • Emperor Claudius II banned marriage because he believed married men were bad soldiers. • Valentine secretly married couples. • When Claudius found out, Valentine was arrested and killed. • Before he was killed he sent a love letter signed “from your Valentine”
  • 3. Typical Symbols • Greeting cards • Hearts • Red roses • Cupid
  • 4. Traditions• Greeting cards to boyfriends and girlfriends.• Anonymous greeting cards.• A lot of people like to get married or propose on Valentines Day.• Romance novels and films.
  • 5. Gifts• Some people buy gifts like: - chocolate - flowers - balloons - teddy bears• Others make a nice gesture like: - cook a meal or go out for dinner - go on a weekend trip
  • 6. Poetry• Its typical for poems to be inside greetings cards.• Some people write their own love poems.• A typical British poem starts with: Roses are red, Violets are blue, Roses are red, I love chocolate, More than you. Violets are blue…….
  • 7. Valentines Vocabulary…• Date: - When a boy and girl go out (to the cinema, for dinner etc.)• Double date: - When 2 couples go out together.• Blind date: - A date arranged by a friend when you have not met the other person.
  • 8. Valentines Vocabulary… • To have a crush on somebody: -To like somebody. • To chat somebody up: -To talk to someone with the hope of starting a relationship. • To break/split up: - To end a relationship • To dump somebody - To break up with somebody.
