  1. 1. • Cloze testsCloze test is a test thatmeasures the reader’sability to decodeinterrupted or mutilatedmessagesTESTING READINGCOMPREHENSIONType of Cloze tests Standard cloze tests Modified cloze tests Multiple-choice cloze tests C-Tests Cloze elidePreface
  2. 2. TESTING READINGCOMPREHENSION•C – TESTS•CLOZE ELIDE•INFORMATIONTRANSFER
  3. 3. C – TEST• Is a reading test which is as anadaption of the Cloze test, itcopes with reduced redudancy andpredict from context.• In the C-test certain words in atext are partially deleted
  4. 4. Advantages of C-test• C-test can be generated on small texts with the largenumber of items• It can be objectively scored• It is much more common for native speakers to be ableto score 100 percent• The C-test is economical and the results obtained areencouraging
  5. 5. Disadvantages of C-test• There is little empirical evidence of its value• It is irritating for students to have to process heavilymutilated texts
  6. 6. The Examples of C-test• to = t_, that = th__• the = th_, their = the__• Last Wednesday we deci___ to visit the zo_. We arri___the next morn__ after taki__ breakf___, cashed in ourpasses and ente___. We walk__ toward the firstexhi___. I look__ up at a gira__ as it star__ back atme. I step___ nerv____ to the next area...etc
  7. 7. CLOZE ELIDE• Is a technique which is generating interestrecently where words which do not belong areinserted into a reading passage• The candidates have to indicate where theseinsertions have been made• In its earlier form, it was known as theintrusive word technique
  8. 8. Advantage n Disadvantage of ClozeElide• Advantage ; The candidate does not have the problem ofunderstanding the questions• Disadvantage ; Scoring is highly problematic
  9. 9. The Examples of Cloze Elide• When I was being standing at a red light, a yellow carran over the light and hit a blue car is going throughthe intersection. The driver of the yellow car he was atfault.............
  10. 10. INFORMATION TRANSFER• In testing both reading and listening comprehension, themeasurement is “ muddied “ by having to employ writingto record answers• To avoid this, several Examination Boards in Britain haveincluded tasks where the information transmittedverbally is transferred to a non-verbal form
  11. 11. Advantages of Information transfer• It is suitable for testing an understanding of process, classification or narrative sequence• It is a realistic task for various situations
  12. 12. DisadvantagesofInformationtransfer• A good deal of care needs to betaken• There is a danger of culturaland educational bias
  13. 13. The Examples of Information TransferThe information transmitted verbally is transferred to anon-verbal form, e.G. Labelling a diagram Completing a chart Numbering a sequence of events, etc
  14. 14. • The use of cloze tests as one of the techniquesused to measure the language ability of thelearners.• That teachers as well as pupils should receiveenough training in how to use and answer thesetests before they start to use these tests. Conclusion
