  • 3. Type of Volcano Caldera volcanos is a cauldron-like volcanic feature usually formed by the collapse of land following a volcano eruption. A collapse is triggered by the emptying of the magma chamber. If the magma is high in silica the cauldron is often filled with igneous rocks.

  • 8. Past Eruptions Yellowstone's last eruption last occurred 64000 years ago. Eruptions of the Yellowstone volcanic system have included the two largest volcanic eruptions in North America in the past few million years.
  • 9. History This volcano was discovered in 1980 The three super eruptions occurred 2.1 million, 1.3 million, and 640,000 years ago, forming the Island Park Caldera, the Henrys Fork Caldera, and Yellowstone calderas, respectively. Within the past 17 million years, 142 or more caldera-forming eruptions have occurred from the Yellowstone hotspot. Due to the volcanic and tectonic nature of the region, the Yellowstone Caldera experiences between 1000 and 2000 measurable earthquakes a year, though most are relatively minor, with a magnitude of 3 or weaker.
