    • Sleep Effect GPAIntroduction Students usually come to school tired. The amount of sleep eachstudent gets effect their concentration level, performance in classes andthe sum of workload they had accomplished. By students sleeping less ormore, the biggest impact, academically, are grades. I am interested in thistopic because I want to see if this experiment will demonstrate the trueeffect between the amount of sleep and students’ grades in total.To show this, I will ask students from grade 9 to 12 the amount of sleepand GPA (Grade Point Average) they have, and then calculate theaverage GPA, and more to observe if my hypothesis is correct. This ishow I will demonstrate my project.Procedure(Utensils required are: paper and pen/pencil) 1. The location of the experiment can be done in a crowded or non- crowded place, such as the cafeteria, library, classroom, etc. 2. Going through each student individually, ask if you may conduct an experiment on them involving GPA (Ensuring that their score will be anonymous) 3. Once the subject agrees, ask how much sleep they get regularly and their GPA 4. Once data is collected, continue with other subjects 5. There must be a fair and large (30+) amount of data for each categoryMathematical ProcessFor this investigation, anaverage GPA is needed to see if the amount ofsleep does affect students’ GPA. The average is summative amountdivided the number of the amount. The standard deviation is thecalculation of dispersal from the data collected. By doing this calculation,it shows the amount of separation between the numbers is to the average.In addition the calculation of mode, median, box plot and scatter plot willhelp identify the difference to see if more or less amount of sleep resultsin higher or lower GPAs/ sleep. 3

The lowest mean are thestudents that had 0-3 hours of sleep.Through knowing this, GPA doeseffect the amount of sleep because 4-6 hours is the somewhat the properamount for the level of academic concentration and performance inclasses. In addition, it would be logically assumed that students who hadslept for only 0-3 hours would have a lower concentration andperformance level; therefore it would also effect the student’s GPA in anegative way. The experiment could have improved by conducting abetter procedure. This could have done by maybe running a few trials toprove or observe the amount of concentration each subjects have. Thiscould be another effective way to see if the amount of sleep effects GPAhowever, the amount of time and data needed would take longer. The experiment had some conflicts. The subjects could have givena false GPA depending how personal students feel their GPA is. This isone of the conflicts that were faced during experimentation. In addition, itwas a challenge to get the right and fair amount of data for each section.Many times, the data was inconsistent with either too little data in onecategory or too many in another. However, this was overcome by properplanning. 11
