What is IVF?
IVF or In Virto Fertilization is a process in which multiple ova (eggs) are taken from the ovaries and put into a liquid environment which keeps them healthy
Then sperm is introduced into the liquid environment to fertilizes the ova, creating the “test tube” babies or zygote
After the sperm has fertilized the egg it is then transferred into the uterus of either the mother or surrogate (carrier)

History of IVF
In 1978, the first “test tube” baby was born. His name was Louise Brown
Louise’s mother was infertile and wished to have a child

Why some people don’t like IVF
After the specific number of ova are fertilized, the rest of the ova are either thrown out, frozen or killed
Others believe the process is artificial and inhumane

Why some people like IVF
People want to have genetic children, instead of adopting

Benefits of IVF
Infertile couples are often able to have children
New discoveries and advancements in reproductive technology and science

Negatives of IVF
In 2001, reproductive scientists iscovered problems with IVF while testing animal cloning procedures. They noticed abnormalities and heart defects and predicted that the same would happen with humans
When the soon to be mother produces her ova she is pumped up with fertility hormones (associated with cancer)
Later, Carmen Sapienza, a geneticist at Temple University School of Medicine, tested further into the IVF mutations and found further complications
Some scientist also argue whether or not intracytoplasmic sperm injection (aided fertilization through injecting sperm) damages the ova

Carmen Sapienza’s Findings
Sapienza noticed a specific chromisomal modification which altered the genes nearby it
Normally limpid genes are turned on and off by certain chromisomes, but with the chromisomal modification caused by IVF, these genes are altered
As a result of the modifications, IVF babies can be more frequently affected by type 2 diabetes, obesity and other metabolic disorders
