  • 2. Purpose• Summarizing and Paraphrasing are two different ways to recap or retell the information in a story or text.• Both methods can be useful in helping to better comprehend and remember a selection.
  • 3. Summarizing• A summary is a short retelling of a story or text that includes only the most important information.• Summaries include the main idea of the text and omit minor details• Summaries are considerably shorter than the original text.
  • 4. Paraphrasing• A paraphrase is a restatement of the author’s words in your own words.• It can often be just as long as the original text.• A paraphrase includes both the main idea and minor details from the text.
  • 5. To Summarize• Summaries and Paraphrases are two different ways to recap the main idea in a selection.• While paraphrases are longer and include more details, both are written in your own words.
