      Sickle Cell Anemia
    • Was most common in Africa.
      Went unreported in Africa until the 1870’s because the symptoms were similar to other tropical diseases In Africa. Also because blood wasn’t usually examined.
      Children born with sickle cell disease usually died while infant. So they aren’t usually seen by physicians.

      People who have disease inherit 2 copies of cell (one from each parent)
      Sickle cell gene causes body to make abnormal hemoglobin.
