  • 2. What is Police Corruption?
    • Police corruption is the abuse of police authority for personal gain.
    • Typical forms of corruption include bribery, extortion, receiving or fencing stolen goods, and selling drugs.

    • Police Corruption is all over Mexico. There are many police officers that abuse the police authority, such as “Los Zetas” .
    • For decades, mexican police have been poorly trained, Unable to stand up to organized crime, political bosses, or their own sometimes corrupt leaders. This leads the police men to corruption, ineffectiveness, and brutality.
    • Mexican police have frequently resorted to extreme and brutal means.
    • One of the major gangs of corrupt police in mexico are called the “Los Zetas". They are most technologically advanced, sophisticated and violent paramilitary enforcement group in Mexico.

    • Federal police and army soldiers are increasingly taking on local and state law enforcement groups that have sold out to drug traffickers and kidnappers in Mexico.
    • Criminal groups and corrupt police are rapidly spreading their influence far beyond the US-Mexico border.

    • Money would get illegally stolen from the companies, governments, and the police.
    • This is a big cause of poverty in Mexico, and the poverty is causing in increase in violence and urging people to pursue illegal methods of income.
    • Police corruption reduces economic growth and thereby reduces the opportunities for the poor to escape from poverty.

    • There are environmental laws in place to protect animal habitats and the atmosphere and to restrict pollution.
    • When the police is corrupted the laws are often ignored and not being enforced.
    • Police corruption causes decrease in public trust in the police.

    • The governmental Impacts police corruption has on Mexico is that the cops do not enforce the laws, so the governments falls apart.
    • Police corruption destroys the political image for the government.

    • The rates of crime and bribery increase, and more people in the country are in risk of danger from the corrupt police.
    • Drug wars and kidnapping increase fatalities.
    • The Gangs of corrupt police are influencing teenagers that are unaware of the happenings and danger behind police corruption.
  • 10. Solutions
    • The Mexican government doesn’t have control over the corrupt police gangs, because the government doesn’t have enough power over some gangs like the ‘los zetas’, so it is hard for the government to stop them instantly.
    • Government needs to provide awareness and better education.
    • The economical problems in Mexico need to be solved so people will not go down the corruption route.
    • Rewards for informing the government about the corrupt members of the police.
