2. 2. Lade Chad

Also known as:

Lac Tchad or Lake Tchad in French

Some refer to it as “a drowned prairie”

Because of the many small islands that are covered in grasses and weeds. Also it is called this because of its shallow waters.

 3. 3. Lake Chad is a historically large lake in Africa. It’s size has decreased greatly over many centuries. It provides water to more than 20 million people living in the four countries surrounding it (Nigeria, Niger, Chad, and Cameroon) http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/41111000/jpg/_41111446_03chad
 4. 4. Lake Chad is a body of water that’s disappearing under the dual assault of climate change and human overuse. Lake, west-central Africa. Located at the juncture of the boundaries of Nigeria, Niger, Chad, and Cameroon, the lake covered 9,900 sq mi (25,600 sq km) in the mid-20th century. Its water level has since dropped — owing to severe drought, the desertification of the surrounding Sahel region, and irrigation projects — and, by the beginning of the 21st century, the lake had shrunk to 580 sq mi (1,500 sq km).

http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://maps.grida.no/library/files/storage/chronology_of_change_natural_and_anthropogenic_factors_affecting_lake_chad.jpg&imgrefurl=http://maps.grida.no/go/graphic/lake-chad-decrease-in-area-1963-1973-1987-1997-and-2001&usg=__AZZRCpSgVZDghZwhGXBsPLKOa24=&h=560&w=873&sz=71&hl=en&start=2&um=1&tbnid=aSDcKBn2aVrEpM:&tbnh=94&tbnw=146&prev=/images%3Fq%3DLake%2Bchad%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26safe%3Dactive%26rlz%3D1T4DKUS_enUS221US221%26sa%3DN

 5. 5. Importance Of Lake Chad

Chad is a landlocked country with cities thousands of kilometers from large water sources.

Because of the distances from large water sources many Africans in Chad and countries bordering Lake Chad are being largely affected by the decrease in the size of lake Chad.

The Northern part of Chad is relies on Lake Chad the most because of the lack of water sources. The southern part of Chad has some water sources but many people have to make large trips to the places that they get water from.

http://www.soschildrensvillages.org.uk/imgs/content/jwp_map_chad_en.gif

 6. 6. Other Details About Lake Chad

The lake possesses several small islands and mudbanks, and its coasts largely consist of marshes. Its area is particularly sensitive to small changes in average depth, and it also shows seasonal changes in size.

The average depth of Lake Chad is around 5 ft. At it’s deepest the lake is around 35 ft.

The lake is fed by the Chari River, and other small rivers and streams.

Lake Chad is believed to be a remnant of a former inland sea which has grown and shrunk with changes in climate though out the past 13,000 years.

At its largest, around 4000 BC, Lake Chad is estimated to have covers 4000,000 square km.
