  8. 8. Ultrasonic- Use of the principles of medicalultrasonography- It uses very high frequency soundwaves to penetrate the epidermal layerof skin- Advantage: create a clean, undamagedepidermal skin and a clean sensingsurface
  9. 9.  Capacitance- Utilizes the principles associated withcapacitance in order to form fingerprintimages- Sensor array pixels → one plate of aparallel-plate capacitor;- The dermal layer (which is electricallyconductive) → the other plate;- The non-conductive epidermal layer →dielectric.
  10. 10. Passive capacitance- Principle:To form an image of thefingerprint patterns on the dermal layerof skin- Each sensor pixel is used to measurethe capacitance at that point of the array
  11. 11. Active capacitance- Use a charging cycle to apply a voltageto the skin before measurement takesplace- Advantage: create a clean, undamagedepidermal skin and a clean sensingsurface.- Active capacitance sensors measurethe ridge patterns of the dermal layerlike the ultrasonic method

Patterns of FingerprintRidges Arch: The ridges enter from one side ofthe finger, rise in the center forming anarc, and then exit the other side of thefinger. Loop: The ridges enter from one side ofa finger, form a curve, and then exit onthat same side. Whorl: Ridges form circularly around acentral point on the finger.
