What is the relationship between the lyrics, music and video?
The whole narrative behind the video is a woman who feels her boyfriend does not want to be with her anymore but is just not telling her so she does what she thinks is best and leaves without saying goodbye, just leaving tracks such as taking her pictures, clothes and number out of his life. To match this feeling of being free we used only women in the video as we noticed it was more about women power rather than her feeling bad because he left her. The beat of the song is quite up beat and so the movements are simple yet quite quick and snappy, the cuts and edits between shots are very modern to match the theme of the music which is quite an updated version of hip hop/ RNB. The lip synching is used as a main feature of the video as we noticed that in that type of video there is usually a lot. On part of the song the lyrics state “I won’t shed a tear if you don’t want me here” for this particular part we used a bit of irony as we used a girl crying while another stood over her lip synching the words, this created a link between the visual and audio. At the beginning the second line “The game was to call it temporary” we portrayed a girl playing scrabble and spelling out temporary I feel this was quite effective as it creates a clearer understanding of the lyrics.
Is the concept narrative or performance?
The video we have created is more narrative than performance in fact there is no performance at all, our video consisted of conforming to the codes and conventions of an RNB genre and so we chose to do a narrative video, however in order to make it unique we chose to use only females in the video, this sort of made the whole narrative of the lyrics more apparent and also I believe this gives the viewer a sense of personal identification with the video. For instance the scene where we have a young girl arguing on the phone may be the link to the video and the audience. Also we use the lyrics in a more literal form in some parts for a sense of symbolism within our narrative, “You cant have your cake and eat it” this scene was portrayed by having a girl cutting a cake while one lip synched the words similarly this technique was used again when the line “I wont shed a tear if you don’t want me here” occurred we chose to have one girl crying and the other lip synching once again and a sense of irony was brought about. In a way there is a kind of performance about the video as we filmed some parts on a background with just singing going on and no real acting or story to it.
