  • 1. CHAPTER 5 NOTES PHOTOSYNTHESIS AND RESPIRATION
  • 2. I. CELLS AND ENERGY
    • A. Without the ability to produce and use energy , living things would not exist .
    • B. Energy in the cell comes from a compound called ATP .
  • 3. II. FERMENTATION
    • The process of making ATP without oxygen .
      • A. Lactic acid fermentation – occurs in most animals .
        • a. causes the burning sensation in muscles when you exercise .
      • B. Alcoholic fermentation – occurs in yeast .
        • a. yeast gives off carbon dioxide and alcohol . This is what causes bread dough to rise and is used in the production of beer and wine.
  • 4. III. RESPIRATION
    • the release of energy from the breakdown of food molecules in the presence of oxygen .
      • A. Respiration takes place in the mitochondria of the cell.
      • B. Takes place in both plant and animal cells.
      • C. You can prove respiration is taking place because carbon dioxide and water are given off as a waste product.
        • (Humans get rid of carbon dioxide by exhaling .
  • 5.
  • 6.
  • 7. Bromythomyl blue turned yellow when you blew bubbles because of the carbon dioxide that you exhaled.
  • 8. Formula for Respiration
    • C 6 H 12 O 6 + 6O 2 = 6CO 2 +6H 2 O+ Energy
    • Reactants – glucose and oxygen
    • Products – carbon dioxide , water , and
    • ATP
  • 9. IV. PHOTOSYNTHESIS
    • Process by which plants use the energy of sunlight to produce food .
      • A. Photosynthesis takes place in the chloroplast of plant cells.
      • B. The green pigment in plants that absorbs light is chlorophyll .
      • C. Glucose is the sugar (food) made by plants. It is changed and stored as starch .
  • 10. Tested a leaf for the presence of starch by crushing the leaf then adding iodine to the leaf. If starch was present, bluish-black color appeared. This proved that photosynthesis had occurred.
  • 11.
  • 12. Formula for Photosynthesis
    • 6CO 2 +6H 2 O+Energy =C 6 H 12 O 6 +6O 2
    • Reactants – carbon dioxide , water , and light energy
    • Products – glucose , oxygen
