  2. 2. The History of Portugual <ul><li>Portugal was a European power during the 15 th and 16 th centuries </li></ul><ul><li>Portugal had an extensive colonial trading empire throughout the world </li></ul><ul><li>Discovered an eastern route to India around the southern tip of Africa </li></ul>

The History of Portugal <ul><li>Ascended to a world power during Europe’s “Age of Discovery” </li></ul><ul><li>Portugal lost much of its wealth as the Dutch, English and French started to take over their share of the spice and slave trades </li></ul><ul><li>An earthquake in 1755 destroyed the capital </li></ul><ul><li>Military declined after funding ships to Spain in their failed attempt to conquer England in 1588 </li></ul>

The Portuguese Empire <ul><li>The first global empire </li></ul><ul><li>Longest lived modern European colonial empire </li></ul><ul><li>In 1419 using developments in navigation, cartography and maritime technology such as the caravel, Portuguese sailors began exploring the coast of Africa so that they might find a sea route to the source of the lucrative spice trade </li></ul>

The Portuguese Empire <ul><li>Vasco da Gama lead a voyage from Portugal to India in 1497, and upon rounding the cape and traveling up the East African coast, reached India in May of 1498 </li></ul><ul><li>A second voyage to India was dispatched in 1500 under Pedro Álvares Cabral </li></ul><ul><li>Instead of reaching India on the second voyage the Portuguese reached Brazil </li></ul><ul><li>In 1581 Spain and Portugal united under Spain’s King Philip I </li></ul><ul><li>As a result of the two uniting, Spain’s enemies became Portugal’s enemies as well </li></ul>

Colonial Brazil <ul><li>The Portuguese discovered Brazil in 1500 on a voyage lead by Pedro Álvares Cabral </li></ul><ul><li>Between 1500 and 1530, relatively few Portuguese expeditions came to the new land to chart the coast and to obtain brazilwood </li></ul><ul><li>In 1534, promoting settlement to overcome the need to defend the territory, John III organized the colonization of Brazil through land grants </li></ul><ul><li>Missionaries came to Brazil to spread the Catholic religion to the natives </li></ul>

Colonial Brazil <ul><li>In 1549 Tome de Sousa established a central government in Brazil </li></ul><ul><li>Brazilwood, sugar production, and diamond and gold mining were the main ecenomic producers for Brazil </li></ul><ul><li>The Dutch and French attempted to start their own colonies in Brazil during Portugals reign of power </li></ul><ul><li>Due to the large size of Brazil the colonies were seperated into separate states in 1621 </li></ul>
